Winter months can be a great time to visit the Preserve, but we want to remind you to be prepared for the weather and trail conditions. While we’ve done a lot of work to address trail safety like rerouting Big Tree trail to areas with fewer tree roots, wet conditions can still make the trail slick. Before you hit Big Tree Trail, be ready for cool, wet weather and unpredictable footing:
- Make sure your cell phone is fully charged.
- Wear long pants and sturdy shoes.
- Wear or bring a water-resistant or waterproof jacket; it will keep your inner layers dry and your body temperature up.
- Load a water-resistant backpack with supplies, including an emergency kit and any medications you may need for asthma or allergic reactions.
- Pack gloves and a warm hat.
- Bring enough water for the trip.
- Carry some quick snacks – stopping to warm up and eat a little bit can help your body finish the hike. (Remember to pack out any wrappers, cans or bottles)
- Have post-hike dry clothing, a thermos of warm water, and shoes waiting for you in your car.
While we don’t advise visiting when there are high winds or snow, don’t let the cold or rain stop you from getting out to Hidden Valley this winter. It’s a great time to enjoy the outdoors without the summer crowds. We look forward to seeing you out there!
